Antennae tapering, compared to more even diameter in Tomocerus

To differentiate between Tomocerus and Pogonognathellus:
In Tomocerus, the long 3rd antennal segment is subcylindrical,
in Pogonognathellus, it is tapering apically.

Also, the ratio of the 3rd antennal segment to the 4th in Pogonognathellus is much larger than in Tomocerus, and the 4th antennal segment is much shorter than the 2nd in Pogonognathellus, while in Tomocerus they are subequal in length.

In the USA, large (about 4-5mm) Pogonognathellus are represented by species that can be distinguished based on the length of the antennae. As a rule of thumb:
if antennae < body, then P. flavescens (it still can be confused with Tomocerus minor and/or vulgaris)
if antennae = body, then P. dubius
if antennae > body, then P. elongatus
Note: you need specimens with intact antennae: the short 4th antennal segment should be present

In Tomocerus, only the first two basal antennal segments have scales, while all antennal segments have scales in Pogonognathellus. This leads to differences in iridisation.
