This looks like Oidaematophor
This looks like Oidaematophorus eupatorii. It normally feeds on species of Joe-Pye-Weed - Eupatorium. Liatris is not a previously recorded host. It would be interesting to know if there is Eupatorium growing nearby or if this is the only plant used at this locality.

I've emailed your question to my friend who is familiar with this prairie as he has done quite a bit of management there. I'll post what he might know about other plants, not necessarily close by but in the prairie last large. It's a hill prairie remnant on sandy soils.
