Deer Fly (Chrysops) - Chrysops lateralis - female

Deer Fly (Chrysops) - Chrysops lateralis - Female
Coldbrook, Kings County, Nova Scotia, Canada
July 1, 2013
Looks ok for C. vittatus but not sure about wing pattern?

Deer Fly (Chrysops)
It is Chrysops lateralis

Wing pattern
When comparing wing patterns of Chrysops look for

Amount of black in "basal cells" (br and bm; in this fly the large clear area towards the wing base from the large black spot). You might find both almost clear, br dark and bm clear, both mostly dark, or some intermediate states.

Amount of black at wing tip: none, thin crescent along edge of wing, small triangle almost cut off from large black spot, or large triangle broadly connected to large black spot.
