Puliciphora? - Puliciphora
Champaign County, Illinois, USA
October 20, 2013
found underneath a rotting pumpkin (the numerous orange photos I submit are all from the same rotting pumpkin). The rotting pumpkin also had a Prenolepis imparis colony underneath, some unidentified rove beetles, and some pillbugs. Additionally, there was another Tapinoma sessile colony about a foot and a half away from the P. imparis colony under the pumpkin, and the Tapinoma ants were also all over the pumpkin.

Clearly a Phoridae, but I cannot confirm Puliciphora from this angle.

Is the information about the ants at all relevant?

Hmm, as far as I'm concern, no. However, I'm not a phorid secialist, so I can be wrong. I often observe these wingless Phoridae under forest litter, but honestly, I don't know on what they feed on. However, I never add the impression of a link with ants. Some Phoridae are associated with ants, but in this case, I don't feel it is the case; but again, I can be wrong.
