This shows my rearing setup that I used to raise my katydids alongside my caterpillars. It's quite simple: a water bottle sitting in a plastic tub on the floor, filled with twigs I collected from trees in my neighborhood. The setup doesn't have an enclosure (I couldn't afford one) and is identical to the one I used to raise my caterpillars. As nymphs, none of the individuals pictured ever strayed away from their leaves and got lost in my room, even though I left the setup in the open. I had several other water bottles with twigs from Norway maple and oak trees, which were also used to feed the caterpillars, and the katydids were allowed to move freely between them. However, the biggest problem with the setup was the cleanup I had to do every afternoon, because the katydids liked to flick their frass away with their hind legs rather than simply letting it fall to into the plastic tub. Otherwise, I was very successful with this setup.
