Definitely Meromacrus - Ken is right as usual!

I'm trying to key it out; unfortunately the latest key I know of for Meromacrus is from 1942. This is probably M. acutus, but I'm not quite sure; I'll keep looking.

edited: There are five species of Meromacrus in the Nearctic. We can rule out M. draco and M. gloriosus - the abdomen is red in both of those species, and this fly's is black. M. croceatus has been described from California, and M. panamensis from the Neotropics (Panama, as implied) - both ranges from diptera.org's Nomenclator. M. acutus is found broadly in the southeastern US, however, so this is almost certainly M. acutus.

edited again! Curran 1930's description of M. panamensis notes that the brown is much more extensive on the wing, going as far as the wing base in the subcostal and first basal cell; this fly doesn't fit that description. The 1960 description of M. croceatus by Hull seems unfindable, unfortunately; however, given the range, I'm comfortable calling this M. acutus.
