Family Syrphidae - Syrphid Flies - Eupeodes - Female
Deane, Letcher County, Kentucky, USA
March 1, 2014
Landed on hood of truck.

Eupeodes (Metasyrphus) sp. female
ID confirmed from specimen, now a photo-voucher. Thanks Lisa.

This female is near E. americanus, but there are about 3 species in this complex whose females cannot be reliably told apart.

Moved from Syrphid Flies.

Eupeodes subgenus Metasyrphus
Eupeodes subgenus Metasyrphus - straight R4+5 vein, hairless eyes, and marginated abdomen with black border diagnose this genus. Glad to see they're out and about!

Thank you
Very much. I have seen several of the Syrphid's out already this year, kinda early snow is still flying.
