Noctuidae on Triosteum perfoliatum, new shoots - Sympistis forbesi

Noctuidae on Triosteum perfoliatum, new shoots - Sympistis forbesi
Little Bluestem Prairie, Boone County, Iowa, USA
March 25, 2012
A Sympistis forbesi larva can be seen on the plant to the right.
Enough shoot material was taken to keep the larvae going until more plants could grow and be gathered as host.
Invariably there were be several larvae on each plant, with new, young instars showing up as the original ones molted and grew.

This is just so fantastic...!!! What an impossibly small creature on an impossibly young plant.

I was looking for the
truly impossible, eggs, somewhere.
Although I didn't find them I did find tiny larvae on new shoots.
