Florida vs. Orange Bluet - Enallagma pollutum - Male

Florida Bluet (Enallagma pollutum) and Orange Bluet (Enallagma signatum) are nearly identical. The primary distinguishing characteristic is the length of the male cerci: longer in Orange Bluet and short in Florida Bluet. Also note the 'lower knob' on the shorter Florida Bluet cerci is more pronounced. Orange Bluet (Enallagma signatum) generally prefers floating vegetation on open water whereas Florida Bluet (Enallagma pollutum) prefers shaded shoreside vegetation, though this is not an absolute rule. Females are most easily distinguished by association with males (or geographic range).
