I think this is actually a carpenter bee - genus

. Note the mostly bare abdomen and very large eyes.

I believe you're correct. I noted the large eyes and near hairless abdomen, but the color of the wings was throwing me. Lighting in photos will sometimes mislead you though. I've identified Xylocopa virginica bees in our flower garden before. Thanks
