Glowworm Beetle - Zarhipis

Glowworm Beetle - Zarhipis
Rancho Bernardo, Lake Hodges, San Diego County, California, USA
February 13, 2003
Size: about 35 mm
I found this one under a rock just after a rain. Did not know at the time that it was a glowworm or I would have observed it overnight. Don't know if this is a female or larva. If anyone can figure it out from this pic, that would be great!

Hiding:-)
I believe it is hiding its head. Larviform females apparently have compound eyes, which easily segretates them from larvae. At that size, I suspect this is a mature larviform female, but can't be conclusive.
