Insect feeding at a Coreopsis bloom that is about 40 mm across (petal tip to tip). Mid-afternoon.

Bee fly
Looks like the bee fly Lepidophora lepidocera, see http://bugguide.net/node/view/2772, but there are two other species of Lepidophora in North America.
