Black furry (spiny?) caterpillars all over my Southern California home - Nymphalis antiopa

Black furry (spiny?) caterpillars all over my Southern California home - Nymphalis antiopa
La Crescenta/Glendale, Los Angeles County, California, USA
March 13, 2014
Size: ~1.5 in. long
I am getting ready to sell my house, and every spring these black caterpillars take over the south side of my house by the front door. I want to power wash the outside of the house, but I would hate to disturb these guys if they are anything other than pests. They showed up a week ago after a giant rainstorm in SoCal. There's easily 20-30 of them, all on just the southern wall of my home. They are in varying stages of cocooning so I've included a picture of their cocoons (crysallises?) as well. I don't remember seeing any butterflies around my house except for small yellow ones, some gray moths, and every once in a while beautiful yellow, black, and white striped ones. So, help me figure out what they are so I know whether I should get rid of them or try to move them somewhere less visible.

Looks like a Mourning Cloak
Images here.

Mourning Cloak
is commonly found feeding on willows. So if you have willows nearby its a likely candidate. The only other butterfly species that gets confused with this is the Red Admiral. They are similar and are often associated with Baby's Tears and other members of the Nettle Family.

Hmm. I have a Chinese Elm in the front yard, along with Calla Lillies, lots of vines, Lily of the Valley, bougainvillia, and various green bushes.

agree with Mourning Cloak
Elm is another common host for this species, so that makes sense. Definitely don't remove them! Look up pictures if you haven't already, they're great butterflies.

Oh they're great! I wouldn't
Oh they're great! I wouldn't dream of moving them. The caterpillars are pretty cute too, why they like my front door I have no idea! I guess I'll have to be careful opening it for a couple of weeks. I'll post pictures if they hatch before I sell the house. Any other tips for taking care of them?
