Dragonfly - Celithemis elisa

Dragonfly - Celithemis elisa
Pine River, Cass County, Minnesota, USA
July 17, 2004
This looks like a Celithemis species, but which one is it? It looks like C. elisa, but the spots on the wings are larger than the image in my key 'Stokes Beginners Guide to Dragonflies'.

Yes, elisa
Every Halloween Pennant (C. eponina) that I have seen has had the band in the middle of the wing extend all the way to the Rear of the wing. The Calico Pennant's midwing stripes/spots do not reach the rear margin of the wing. You are right, Bill the spots on the wings do not always look the same and there is great variability in the relative sizes of the wing spots. Look at the midwing stripe/spot. Also the clear portions of the wings would be orangish in the Halloween.

Nice shot.

Kurt

C Elisa female
is correct.

and in Minnesota --
What about Kurt Mead's "Dragonflies of the North Woods" (1) ?

elisa looks right
The spots can vary quite a bit in size.
