Large green grasshopper - Schistocerca lineata - Female
Dripping Springs near Las Cruces, New Mexico, Dona Ana County, New Mexico, USA
June 1, 2010
I would like vto know what kind of grasshopper this is. I like to have the common name and scientific name.

Moved
Moved from Bird Grasshoppers.

a bird grasshopper, Schistocerca sp.
Moved from ID Request.
Looks like one of the "Alutacea group", which are hard to tell apart. I'd guess either S. lineata or S. obscura.

Thank you for giving me a better idea of how to look at this large grasshopper! Here are the pair which I assme are a male and a female.

Mr. and Mrs. Grasshopper

yes, it's a male and female pair
The males are usually easier to identify than the females, especially if you can see the tip of their abdomens, so it might be worth posting a close-up of him here.

male & female bird grasshoppers
Thank you. I assumed that to be the case because one is much smaller than the other and no more of their species were on that bush. I'm sorry, but I do not have another photo that would show the tip of the abdomens more clearly. These photos were taken in 2010 when I still lived in El Paso, TX. I'm a very long way from there now, so cannot hope to capture additional shots of these any time soon.
