Small Flower Fly - Syritta pipiens

Small Flower Fly - Syritta pipiens
Durham County, North Carolina, USA
June 27, 2003
Looks just like other images identified as Syritta pipiens. It is even at the same season (late June-July) and on the same plant, Queen Anne's Lace, Daucus carota as shown in John Fox's image from Virginia:

Interesting that Paul Beuk mentioned the fly is also found in Europe--Queen Anne's Lace is an introduction from Europe.

Syritta pipiens
This is a good image for showing the spines on the ventral edge of the hind femur - and the lack of a spur near the base, which rules out S. flaviventris, as Paul mentioned in another posting. I think the fly's occurrence on Queen Anne's Lace in June/July is just coincidence, as this species seems to be a generalist feeder from spring through fall: I've photographed it on Marsh Marigold and Balsam Ragwort in May, Catnip in July, and New England Aster in September & October.

Thanks for confirmation, QAL
Thanks for confirmation. Good point about the coincidental nature of feeding on Queen Anne's Lace. It is, of course, popular with all sorts of native North American insects. I don't know what native Flower Longhorns (Lepturinae) fed on before "QAL" was introduced--that's the best place to find them.
