Small Mayfly - Callibaetis floridanus - female

Small Mayfly - Callibaetis floridanus - Female
Palm Beach County, Florida, USA
November 28, 2004
Another Small Mayfly from the family Baetidae. Again, note the lack of hindwings. This one was attracted to artificial light.

Moved
Moved from Callibaetis.

Callibaetis
This is a dark female C. floridanus imago. The rather even posterior border of the dark vitta of the forewing, few forewing cross veins, single marginal intercalaries, and conspicuous punctate dots on the femora are typical.

Clarification
Just as an addendum to the comments about hindwings, I thought I'd clarify that most (but not all) baetids do have hindwings, including Callibaetis. It's just that they are minute (and hyaline in the imago), making them difficult to see on many photos. The speckled wings and bodies of many Callibaetis make the hindwings particularly difficult to see.

Baetidae
A female imago of Callibaetis (Heptagenioidea: Baetidae). Three southeastern species; C.pretiosus, C.fluctuans, and C. floridanus, your guess is as good as mine.

Small Mayfly
I like the "shattered glass" wings - very distinctive. Thanks for posting this and adding the Baetidae page to the Guide.

Trying to sort out a LARGE order...
Thanks Robin,

I was glad I was at least able to nail down a family, I've read that many Mayfly species can only be identified in their nymph stage...hopefully one day we'll get an expert to stop by and help ID some of the great pics people have uploaded here.
