Clivina pallida

Clivina pallida
nr. Ponca, Bufalo National River, Steel Creek, Newton County, Arkansas, USA
June 28, 2013
Size: 6 mm
Identified using "Ground and Wrinkled Bark Beetles of South Carolina". It has all of the Clivina species recorded from Arkansas by Bousquet (2012) except C. acuducta and C. rufa. Presuming it's not one of those or a new species, it keys nicely to C. pallida.

Clivina pallida feedback
Image shows enough reddish in dorsum, vertex smooth enough, and, most importantly, eyes reduced enough to certainly fit Clivina pallida. It's a good idea to compare eye size in C. pallida and C. impressefrons side by side to make sure of this distinction. Ciegler missed the much smaller eyes in C. pallida compared to its otherwise superficial resemblance to a small C. impressefrons. I'm a bit bothered that ABL here is ~ 6 mm because 5.3 mm is reported as the upper limit for C. pallida. These two are members of the fossor group and the best key to sort them all out is by Bousquet in Coleopterists Bulletin 51(4):343-349, 1997.

Micahel, the two other AR species missing from Ciegler belong to subgenus Lecucocara of which three members are distinguished here.
