Size: ~5mm
Found under rock on edge of chaparral and sandy clearing, appeared to be associated with Formica moki; appears to have a mite on its head

First images at BG of this recently described, southern California / northern Baja California endemic ant. It is a specialist parasite (slavemaker) of Formica moki. Good view of the characteristic mandibles of species in this genus.
I see mites like that one fairly frequently on Polyergus.
