To me the moth this most closely resembles on MPG is A. australis:

Particularly the image of the pinned female with the bolder markings. MPG only has one record, though, so I'm being hesitant. Suggestions appreciated. Habitat was a rocky outcrop on a mixed grassy / coastal chaparral hillside. Poison oak, coyotebrush around.

Actually on further consideration and with advice from Paul Johnson, I think this might be Acronicta spinea, which doesn't seem to be listed in BG, and lacks live shots at MPG (though the pinned shots look like a good match: http://mothphotographersgroup.msstate.edu/species.php?hodges=9276&state=CA). Thoughts?
