Dolichovespula sp? - Dolichovespula
Pueblo City Park, Pueblo County, Colorado, USA
March 30, 2014
Approx. 25 ft. up a Box Elder Tree. No activity seen.

Moved
Moved from Dolichovespula.

This nest seems to be D. arenaria
The laminar envelope construction is a dead giveway as there seems to be no scalloping of the envelope whatsoever. The nest also seems to be in remarkable shape for being found in March! There is a slight possibility that the nest could also belong to D. alpicola a species we know very little about. D. alpicola can be found in Colorado, but no live images exist on bugguide (or anywhere for that matter!).

Thanks for the information,
Thanks for the information,

I'll keep a watch out in that area, maybe I can find some adults.

That would be great as if the wasps proved to be D. alpicola,
It would be the first photo of a nest of this species ever doccumented and a great new addition for Bugguide.
