The springtails were trying to jump out of the water until they couldn't jump anymore. That explains why a few had their furca extended. Thanks Frans.

Entomobrya assuta
Note the extended furca. This furcal position is typical for an exhausted specimen, that consumed all its energy in jumping trying to escape. It does not has the strength anymore to 'pull up' its furca underneath it where it belongs...
