White-eyed bee - Xylocopa tabaniformis - Male

Stockier than normal honey bee. Seems to be protecting the Clematis vine but not feeding on the flowers. I have witnessed it chase wasps and a bumblebee away from the vine. I also saw it attack another insect - possibly a mud dauber.
