Christmas eve caterpillar (DCP46) - Noctua pronuba

Christmas eve caterpillar (DCP46) - Noctua pronuba
McLean, Fairfax County, Virginia, USA
December 24, 2006
Size: 1 inch
Found this unknown caterpillar on my driveway the day before Christmas. Unseasonably warm weather; latest I've ever seen a caterpillar in this area. No leaves on trees so it must have been feeding on something in the lawn. Approx 1 inch in length.

Moth
Looks like a noctuid cutworm larva, perhaps Noctua pron*uba. I saw a good many of these a couple weeks ago as I was raking leaves. I thought they were feeding on the lawn.

this may be a sawfly larva.
this may be a sawfly larva. Wish I could say more than that.
