The apparent head shape really seemed to shift depending on the angle. Could it be Camponotus clarithorax instead? Are there species keys available for these; I'm having trouble separating them? Are there features I should be homing in on to separate C. anthrax, clarithorax and hyatti. It seems like there might be a mix of all three on any given tree.

C. hyatti is easily distingui
C. hyatti is easily distinguished from all California Camponotus except C. bakeri by the pronounced metanotal impression (which this specimen lacks). To me the setational pattern on the gaster looks more like C. anthrax, and the chaparral habitat fits as well.

Thanks!
Thanks for the ID tip for C. hyatti :o)
