It was on my porch....it doesn't look like a Wolly Bear-I haven't seen one of those with that bright red on it. and no it wouldn't uncurl.....even a day later..and it was alive--just annoyed I think. I finally let it go.

Just looking around here-could this be Hypercompe scribonia? I didn't think we had those here...I never saw one anyway. ????

Yes.
Yes, this is the larva of a great leopard moth. Like woolly bears, they overwinter as nearly mature larvae. The species ranges well north of you if my memory is correct. Adults emerge quite early in the spring, which may be why they are seldom seen.

Okay Thanks! ^__^ The only Great Leopard Moth I have ever seen was in SC in June 2004 that's why it surprised me! I will be on the look out this year!
