Butterfly or moth? -
Malacosoma disstria
Austin, Travis County, Texas, USA
April 22, 2014
Size: caterpillar
Found it on the pool pump and tried to put it on some herbs. It wasn't happy so I let it go and then today found it swimming in the pool.

Tent Caterpillar
This was my favorite caterpillar as a child! :-) It is a beautiful Tent caterpillar. Yours likely was trying to find a place to pupate. They get very restless and are "go go GO" when they are done growing and those raging hormones (yes, hormones!) get them going. I blogged about it here: http://lezasleps.blogspot.com/2008/06/tent-caterpillars.html

Forest Tent cat…
The reference mentions some trees that it feeds on which might be nearby.
See reference
here.
