6581 - Iridopsis perfectaria
Torrey Pines St. Reserve, Sorrento Valley Marsh, San Diego County, California, USA
June 9, 2005
Adds California
Identified by DNA barcoding, BOLD LOCB120-06
Specimen collected by Norris Bloomfield
The specimen is shown at BOLD:AAC7120

Geometrid Moth
I think that Chuck is correct. This one is probably another Iridopsis fragilaria.

Barcoding not reliable here.
There are some issues with the barcode results from several of the Iridopsis. For the BOLD BIN cited above, multiple species are included with the 19 specimens of perfectaria, and its "nearest neighbor"--separated by 3 to 4% difference--is another BIN labeled Iridopsis perfectaria. So this is clearly a complicated species complex with unsettled taxonomy.

My own suspicion is that these isolated (?) California populations will eventually be found to be distinct from those in Texas.
