Virginia Ctenucha caterpillar? - Lophocampa argentata

Virginia Ctenucha caterpillar? - Lophocampa argentata
Mesa Verde National Park - Mesa Top Loop, Montezuma County, Colorado, USA
April 14, 2014
Size: Over 1 inch
A number of these caterpillars were crawling around on the ground in a pinion-juniper woodland around 7000 feet of elevation. Appears similar to the Virginia Ctenucha, but distribution records indicate this species is uncommon/rare/not present in SW CO. I suspect another species is more likely, but no idea what that might be.
