Bombardier Beetle - Brachinus fumans

Bombardier Beetle - Brachinus fumans
Addison, Addison County, Vermont, USA
April 24, 2014

Moved
Moved from Bombardier Beetle.
Thanks Peter. These Brachinus are a fun group of beetles and I'm glad you're examining the specimens!

Brachinus fumans
based on my microscopic examination of this male specimen which is deposited in the P.W.Messer collection as a photo-voucher. Thanks Tom.

New species to BugGuide and in the fumans group - no surprise!
Helpful clues are a moderately large body size (this one ~ 12 mm long), pale venter except for darkened sides of abdomen, elytra with prominent ridges, and pronotum strongly constricted toward base.
