black-scratched weevil - Sciaphilus asperatus

black-scratched weevil - Sciaphilus asperatus
Lucan Conservation Area, Ontario, Canada
May 22, 2004
These ones have a fat abdomen in comparison to the thorax/head, and they have black "scratch" marks on the rear end, similar to Sciaphilus asperatus shown here, here, and here. The last site mentioned calls this species Strawberry Root Weevil - the same name often given to Otiorhynchus ovatus.

Thanks, Tom

Robin, I had this one identified by a German beetle entomologist as Sciaphilus asperatus.
It looks like this is the same species as my picture.
