Drumming Katydid
This looks to me like a Drumming Katydid (Meconema thalassinum), an introduced exotic whose range in North America is still very spotty but definitely expanding. This site has some good images of this species (search for: 'drumming katydid') and the Singing Insects site page about it is at:

http://buzz.ifas.ufl.edu/103a.htm

The range map at that above site is already out of date, by the way--'drummers' have since shown up on the West Coast. This is one species for which it's well worth using a good search engine to ferret out all the most recent internet reports about them to get the best idea of their current status.

I concur.
The identification is correct, and this is a male specimen (no ovipositor, very long cerci on the end of the abdomen). This is an excellent image, too, thank you for sharing. Consider reporting this to the NY State Dept. of Agriculture, too, they may want to know about where this insect is turning up. Yours might be a state record, even.
