Twitchy blue-black wasp - Podium luctuosum
Pensacola, Escambia County, Florida, USA
May 13, 2014
This very twitchy blue-black wasp was flitting along in a sandy cross-county trail in the Baars-Firestone Wildlife Sanctuary at the University of West Florida. Any information about its identity will be greatly appreciated!

Nice find! Sphex nudus shows the same pattern but is a little more thickset and has black fifth tarsomeres.

Thanks!
Thanks so much! I would think Pensacola would be a great place for a roach hunter – there certainly are lots of roaches there! It looks like I photographed the same species in the same location in May 2011, but I didn't submit the photos because they were so blurry – these wasps do not want to sit still.

The far west Florida panhandle is very underrepresented on BugGuide, so every time I go to Pensacola, I try to photograph and submit a few insects. I've been surprised that several of the them have actually turned out to be uncommon on BugGuide.
