ID confirmed from specimen, now a photo-voucher. Thanks John, really cool beetle.

 
I thought it was pretty spiffy
Seems to be mostly found on the west coast.

 
they pop up more or less around the world...
...and it's not what you would call an uncommon species, but i've never seen it en masse --or, in fact, collected a series, just a lone specimen every now and then around the house
and yes, they certainly look clever
