Explanation of Names

original combination Tinea apparella Herrich-Schaffer, 1855

Size

forewing length 3.6 - 4.8 mm (1)

larvae up to 6.4 mm

pupae 4.5 mm

egg 0.3 mm long x 0.19 mm wide x 0.14 mm deep

Identification

Adults - slender bronzy brown forewings partially traversed by usually five, rarely four, mostly oblique white costal bands and usually five, highly variable, white dorsal bands. Hindwing and fringe uniformly pale gray (1)

Egg - Flat, lightly cemented to host leaf (1)

Range

Widely distributed in North America, from New Mexico, Ohio, and southern Maryland, north to central Alaska and Ontario (1)

Food

In North America, Populus tremuloides is the most frequently encountered host, with P. grandidentata and P. canescens also being mined (Braun, 1908). Populus balsamifera, P. deltoides and Salix sp. serve as hosts much less frequently (1)
