springtail - Seira purpurea

springtail - Seira purpurea
Sunol Regional Park, Sunol, Alameda County, California, USA
May 27, 2006
Size: <2mm
I'm posting this image in case it helps with this other image I posted -- it may not be the same individual; the angle is only slightly different but it's the most "different" angle I have.

Moved
Moved from Seira.

Moved
Moved from Entomobryidae.

Seira purpurea for the time being
Blowing up the image shows a faint iridisation. This suggests the body is covered with translucent scales. This excludes Sinella. Given the relatively short 4th abdominal segment, best match is then Seira.
As for the species: tentatively purpurea (in fact knowltoni, but that name has been synonymised with purpurea). We will have to wait for more specimens to be sure.
