Identification
Distinguished from other Hybotinae east of the Rocky Mountains by base of Rs joining R near the base of the basal R cell.
Remarks
Species known from North America:
S. albonotatus (Texas to New Jersey; mostly black, thorax with whitish spots)
S. ater (Northeast; mostly black, wings darkened)
S. debilis (Southeast north to New Jersey)
S. frosti (Florida)
S. hyalinus (Southeast north to Long Island)
S. longipennis (Southeast)
S. pusillus (East; wing entirely clear)
S. rufus (Northeast)
S. simplex (Rocky Mountains to Atlantic; wing with several spots)
S. thoracicus (East; thorax often with stripes; = testaceus)
S. vittatus (Southern Arizona; banded abdomen)
Most of these species are listed in
Coquillett's 1896 revision and
Melander's 1902 paper. Melander 1928
