Mother-lode of tufted millipedes - Polyxenus lagurus

Mother-lode of tufted millipedes - Polyxenus lagurus
Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
January 7, 2007
Size: 0.75 - 3 mm approx.
This series is dedicated to Lynette Schimming, who IDed my first one.

I was hacking around on some dead aspen, including one trunk section that was hung up in the air in some bittersweet vines. I was aspirating small critters that moved when I lifted the rather loose bark and under the bark that was on the bottom end of this upside-down trunk section in the vines I found the mother-lode of tufted millipedes of all ages.

Here you see the contents of my aspirator, including various fly larvae, springtails, mites, and at least 100 tufted millipedes (to be released soon). I was quite pleased to have gotten some images much better than any I've taken in the past.

Moved from Polyxenidae.

Great Find!
I guess they are plentiful enough if you know where to look. Great shots of these tiny millipedes!

Ha! Thanks.
I've never looked for them. They're always a nice surprise when I find them.
