This hornet looks like it's halfway between an Eastern Yellowjacket and a European Hornet. The last representative image on BG's Vespinae info page shows an Eastern Yellowjacket queen that looks very close to my hornet. Is that what I've photographed?

Given the early date in the p
Given the early date in the photograph, yes this does appear to be a queen eastern yellowjacket. A worker of either the european hornet or the eastern yellowjacket would not have hatched this early in the season, so any wasps you see now are queens.
