Clark's Day Sphinx - Proserpinus clarkiae - Male
Fraser Canyon, cca. 14 km S of Lytton, Thompson-Nicola Regional District, British Columbia, Canada
April 29, 2014
Pupae were kept outside in order to mimic natural conditions (including misting every time it rained). Two died last year just prior to emergence. This one survived and emerged this year (so it overwintered for two straight years). However, it too had issues. First, the adult emerged as a breech birth and couldn't get rid of the thoracic and cephalic pupal plates. Second, the colours are off and the hindwing dorsum is almost completely black. Third, the adult had deformed hindlegs and could not roll its proboscis. I was very lucky to be nearby when it emerged so i could help him free from the exuvium and climb the cage mesh in order to inflate its wings (which also took an exceedingly long time).
