hangingfly - Bittacus strigosus

hangingfly - Bittacus strigosus
Lucan Conservation Area, Middlesex, Ontario, Canada
July 15, 2003
I've been even less successful than Patrick in getting a decent shot of a hangingfly. The only attribute here is the pose, illustrated in Bland and described as "Adults typically hang by their front legs from vegetation and capture passing insects with their hind feet."

Moved
Moved from Bittacus.

ID
Bittacus strigosus. Sex uncertain.

Nice shot!
Hey, this shows the tarsi really well, very helpful. These things are so not in one plane of focus, it is really hard to get a good photo. Also, they always perch in some impenetrable thicket, and are disturbed when the photographer tries to insert the camera. I'll have to try these next summer with my little point-and-shoot, which can be maneuvered, sometimes, through vegetation.
