The Herald - Scoliopteryx libatrix Mason Farm Biological Reserve, Orange County, North Carolina, USA September 19, 1992
Attracted to moth bait during a survey by Dr. Stephen Hall of the North Carolina Natural Heritage Program. Date was, I believe, September 1992, and is entered here as an approximation. This moth is very uncommon in the lower Piedmont of North Carolina--as of 1992, Dr. Hall had only seen this one during his surveys in the area. It seems to be a more northern species.
Image updated 4/27/19. Still the only BugGuide record for North Carolina as of then! (And as of 18 July 2023 as well. There are four records on iNaturalist for the state as of that date.)
Update on date. Associated field trip with Dr. Hall at Mason Farm for butterflies was Saturday 19 September 1992. I think he put the bait out after the field trip Saturday morning and then we came back to check it that same evening, which nails down the date.
