Calodrepa - Calosoma scrutator

Calodrepa - Calosoma scrutator
Alexandria, Fairfax County, Virginia, USA
May 10, 2014
Size: ~1"
Can species be determined from this photo? I didn't realize measuring would help determine, but it was definitely closer to an inch than an inch and a half.

I found this in my box of potting dirt, by the way, which is a covered plastic box. Good thing for it I happened to need to open that box just then! It doesn't happen often. I'm wondering how it got in in the first place - maybe I dumped old dirt from a dead plant in there and the egg or larva was in it.

Moved
Moved from Subgenus Calodrepa.

After seeing specimens of the two species in an actual collection, I could easily tell which this one was, as it was larger and more brightly colored, which may not be evident from the photo.
