Hickory Galls - Phylloxera caryaemagna

Hickory Galls - Phylloxera caryaemagna
Wildwood Park; Radford, Virginia, USA
May 24, 2014
I'd like an Id for these galls. I opened one up to see the critters inside.
Sorry, I do not know what the tree is, but I have posted leaves.

caryaemagna
According to Dr Hamilton's dissertation, Phylloxera caryaemagna is no longer a subspecies of caryaecaulis and is a valid species in its own right. The pubescence and sponginess in this observation show it is caryaemagna, not caryaecaulis, according to her key.

Thank you!
I appreciate this info!

Moved from Phylloxera.

No, phylloxerans are their own thing--a distinct superfamily from aphids.

Thanks!
I appreciate that info, Charlie.

Host plant...
...is a species of hickory (Carya).

Species ID
This is Phylloxera caryaemagna.

caryaecaulis?
A quick search suggests P. caryaemagna is a synonym of caryaecaulis.

Thanks!
And the critters are aphids, correct?
