Ant hill - Pogonomyrmex occidentalis

Ant hill - Pogonomyrmex occidentalis
Prescott, Yavapai County, Arizona, USA
May 26, 2014
I didn't see any ants (I was there at sunset) A cleared space like Harvesters, about 4 m wide. There were several of these hills in and open, sandy area where the trees had been destroyed. Dry, but part of the Granite Creek Riparian Preserve

from Derek Uhei
This species makes distinct mounded nests, unique on the Colorado Plateau. Some nests are in the same place that the first photographs in the late 1800s show them in!
