Yellow beetle - Cotalpa lanigera

Yellow beetle - Cotalpa lanigera
seacoast of northern Mass. County, Massachusetts, USA
May 28, 2014
Size: about 3/4 inch
This yellow beetle was found in an outside water dish following a rain storm last night. It was in water with leaf debris. I thought it was dead, but it began moving once inside the house. What you cannot see from this image is the head is articulated and glows almost phosphorescent in direct light. The beetle is alive and appears to chomp on leaves in its container. If someone could please tell me what type beetle and what it generally eats, I would appreciate it. Thanks!

See reference here. It mentions the types of trees it feeds on there as well.

Thank you for the ID and information. Odd find then since it was no where near any tree. I suspect it blew or otherwise was transported from the back acres of trees approximately 1/4 mile from house.

Sometimes birds will pick off these beetles for food, and then drop them accidentally as they fly by. Scarabs are very strong, and can occasionally muscle their way out of the jaws of death.
