Spider BG395 - Falconina gracilis
Baton Rouge, Farr Park, East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, USA
August 13, 2006
Size: body length 6.4 mm.
While superficially similar to Ground Spiders (Gnaphosidae), the eye arrangement is clearly not of this family. The best eye pattern match that we could find is Funnel-web_Spiders_(Agelenidae). Details of capture were not recorded, but it was not in a funnel web. More likely on the ground or on low foliage. Having recently discovered how to produce movable, resizeable geometric outlines in Photoshop, I attempted to reproduce the outline of the eyes of this specimen on image number 4 of 7. Black eyes on a black carapace should be against the law! Especially when the photo of the eyes is sub-par. I cannot claim that the shape/size of the eye outlines are accurate (are the ovals actually round?), but I think position is usable. Four cropped images are included that provide some detail on eyes and palps. Help anyone?
