Robber Fly - Brachypalpus oarus

Robber Fly - Brachypalpus oarus
Houghton, Houghton County, Michigan, USA
May 31, 2014
This robber fly landed on a tree and I was able to get a few pictures of it. I would like to know the species of this fly.
Robber flies are my favorite and this is the first one I've seen this spring. I took the pictures at 2:00 p.m. The habitat
is a woodland with conifers and sandy soil. There is a trail that hikers use. The location is in the western Upper Peninsula
of Michigan. Thank you.

Moved
Moved from Syrphid Flies.

Ben's got it - Brachypalpus oarus. Chalcosyrphus inarmatus looks very similar and is also in your area, but has bright orange on the hind tarsomeres, which this fly lacks.

Moved
Moved from Flies. Looks like Brachypalpus oarus to me.

looks like a syrphid to me
