Bee Killer - Mallophora fautrix

Bee Killer - Mallophora fautrix
Skull Valley, AZ, USA (WSW of Prescott 10 miles), Yavapai County, Arizona, USA
August 30, 2006

Moved
Moved from Flies.

Mallophora
In AZ it is basically fautrix or orcina and this is not orcina.

Nice kill. He appears to barely have it by one claw.

Thanks for resizing the image
Thanks for resizing the image, it's much better.

I think it had about finished with that "meal", was disturbed by me and was ready to Fly away!

Africanized Honey Bees
Is this recognizable from the image as an africanized honey bee, or are you just referring to the fact that bees in that area are known to be africanized?

New Marketing opportunity
Bee Killer Farming
New biological control agent! The thought did occur to me....but again can they be trained to only feast on Africanized bees?

Do you have any good honeybee images?
I've created an African Honeybee (Apis mellifera scutellata) page, but we have no verified images for it. Your county is mentioned specifically in several sources as pretty much taken over by Africanized Honeybees- so I think it's our best shot.

Africanized bees
We have a local "Bee Man", I'll check with him and see if he knows if there are any here; if so maybe we can get a series of images.

Killers
At least one of the Mallophora lay the eggs in a white casing on branches and limbs that could be transferred to problem areas. Though I am not sure I would want to be the one carrying the case there. Not sure how the overall battle would go over time with the bee numbers so high in a local hive.
