Thanks for the ID! Never seen it before since I have been photographing garden insects since 2009 but it has been abundant this spring.

 
It has been introduced from E
It has been introduced from Europe since more than 100 years, and it loves compost piles... (where the larvae develop) It is one of the most common Syrphids... The more you look and the more you photograph the more you will see.... Some Syrhids I did not find for several years, but after I found them the first time, I see them every day!
